I was working on a film in Taos in September of 2005 when I came up with the name Tamalewood. I mentioned it to someone I shouldn't have trusted and the next thing I knew, The Santa Fe Reporter was using it as a headline. Nevertheless, I own the legally registered Service Mark "Tamalewood" in the state of New Mexico and I've applied for federal registration of my Service Mark.

Many folks may not be aware of the fact that the name "Tamalewood" has been copyrighted by Lenny Sanchez. Lenny is a graduate of the Film Technicians Training Program at Santa Fe Community College, is a member of IATSE Local 480 and has worked on a number of area productions in the past year. He first coined the term while working on an indie project in northern New Mexico in the fall of 2005.
He also funded and created the first (annual hopefully) Tamalewood award at the 2006 Santa Fe Film Festival (Presented to "Borderlands").
Lenny is a native New Mexican (born in Espanola) and is a very dedicated and enthusiastic supporter of home-grown New Mexico media.

I have known Lenny Sanchez for a number of years. The first time I ever heard of "Tamalewood" was in the Spring of 2005 when Lenny mentioned to me that he had coined the name for his budding film company here in New Mexico. I'm the one who suggested to him that he register this unusual moniker.
